Poet Poisoning Claims: New Neruda Death Probe

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 22 Januari 2015 | 23.31

The death of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda is being investigated again to determine whether he was poisoned.

Officials are reopening the inquiry after previous tests on the Nobel laureate's body, which was exhumed for a second time in 2013, found no evidence of foul play.

He died 12 days after the 1973 military coup that led to the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, and less than a day before he was due to go into exile. He was 69.

Although best known for his poetry, he was also a prominent Communist party member and a supporter of the deposed President Salvador Allende.

Some people also believed that he would have gone on to become an opposition leader.

Neruda's death was initially attributed to prostate cancer, but his driver, Manuel Araya, suspected that he may have been poisoned after he reported feeling sick following a hospital injection.

Confirming the fresh investigation, the head of the government's human rights department, Francisco Ugas, said further tests for a wider range of chemicals will now be carried out.

"There is initial evidence that he was poisoned," he said.

"These signs also point to the intervention of specific agents, therefore there are indications that this would constitute or could constitute a crime against humanity."

A panel of forensic experts from Spain and Chile are carrying out the new tests, which have been welcomed by the poet's family.

His cousin, Rodolfo Reyes, said: "It's a need not only for the family, but also for Chile and the world to know the real causes of death of Pablo Neruda."

Museum Superglues Tutankhamun's Broken Mask

The burial mask of the world's most famous pharaoh, Tutankhamun, has been glued together after a cleaner accidentally broke it.

The 3,300-year-old mask has been permanently damaged after its blue and gold beard was knocked off while it was on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The relic was then hastily stuck together with cheap superglue.

It is not clear when it happened and museum workers have given differing accounts as to how it was damaged, but they all say their co-worker was told to fix it quickly.

One conservator said: "Unfortunately he used a very irreversible material - epoxy has a very high property for attaching and is used on metal or stone but I think it wasn't suitable for an outstanding object like Tutankhamun's golden mask.

"The mask should have been taken to the conservation lab but they were in a rush to get it displayed quickly again and used this quick drying, irreversible material."

The mask reportedly now shows a gap between the face and the beard. Another museum worker added that once the glue had dried on the face of the mask, a colleague used a spatula to remove it, leaving scratches.

The mask was discovered by British archaeologists Howard Carter and George Herbert in 1922, and it revived a worldwide interest in archaeology.

Neither the Antiquities Ministry nor the museum administration could be reached for comment, but museum employees say an investigation into the incident is under way.

ECB Triggers On €1.1tn Quantitative Easing

The European Central Bank (ECB) has confirmed a €1.1tn stimulus scheme aimed at halting the eurozone's slide towards economic stagnation.

The monetary policy measure, announced at a news conference by ECB president Mario Draghi, was bolder than investors had expected - with European stock markets rising and the euro falling in value as the core details emerged.

Its current stimulus would be extended from March to include so-called quantitative easing, the Bank confirmed.

The ECB said it intended to spend a combined €60bn (£46bn) a month on sovereign and corporate bonds until September 2016, with individual central banks in the 19-member eurozone sharing some of the risks of the money-printing exercise.

The flood of money should bring borrowing costs down, boost bank lending and weaken the euro further to bolster its  competitiveness.

The aim of the QE programme is to prevent the euro area spiralling into deflation - an entrenched period of falling prices which puts consumers and businesses off spending.

Inflation is already running at -0.2% and Mr Draghi told reporters the outlook required a "forceful" policy response.

The ECB said countries under a bailout programme, such as Greece, would be included in the QE programme but with some additional criteria.

A political crisis in Greece risks plunging the euro area into further chaos, as a snap general election this Sunday could bring an anti-bailout party to power - a development which would potentially lead to the country's exit from the single currency.

The QE programme was announced two-and-a-half years after Mr Draghi pledged to "do whatever it takes" to save the euro amid fierce opposition to QE from Germany over fears it will stop national governments fixing their finances.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said any ECB decision could not replace government action on tackling debt.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos she said: "It should not obscure the fact that the real growth impulses must come from conditions set by the politicians.

"What's important for me is that (politicians) move even more decisively to address the issues, rather than thinking that the buying of time through other measures means we can forget about structural reforms."

The ECB did not need German permission for QE.

It said bonds would be bought on the secondary market in proportion to the ECB's capital key, meaning the largest economies from Germany down will see more of their debt purchased by the ECB than smaller peers.

The bonds will mature over periods of between two and 30 years.

The prospect of dramatic ECB action had already prompted the Swiss central bank to abandon its cap on the franc while
Denmark, whose currency is pegged to the euro, was forced to cut interest rates in anticipation of the flood of money.

The euro dropped 1.4 cents against the dollar following the QE announcement while bond yields in Italy and Spain hit historic lows, reducing the cost of servicing their debts.

Video: Police Shoot Unarmed Black Man

Newly released footage has revealed the moment a man was shot dead during a police traffic stop in New Jersey as he got out of a car.

The footage, captured by a police dashboard camera, shows officers making a traffic stop in Bridgeton, New Jersey, on 30 December.

But the situation becomes increasingly tense as one officer warns his partner that he has seen a gun in the glove compartment of the Jaguar car.

Officer Braheme Days repeatedly shouts at the passenger "show me your hands!" while warning him not to "reach for something" inside the vehicle.

He then appears to reach into the car and remove a gun, but the passenger, Jerame Reid, gets out of the vehicle and is shot several times.

Officer Days and his partner have been placed on leave pending a Cumberland County prosecutor's office investigation.

The shooting has sparked protests in Bridgeton and comes after months of demonstrations over the killings of unarmed black men by white police officers in New York and Ferguson, Missouri.

In the footage, the officers pull over the Jaguar for going through a stop sign.

Officer Days steps back, pulls out his gun and tells the men inside the car to "show me your hands".

The leader of Germany's anti-Islam group PEGIDA has resigned after a picture appeared online of him posing with a Hitler-style moustache and haircut.

Lutz Bachmann apologised to supporters of the Patriotic Europeans Against The Islamisation Of The West (PEGIDA) and announced he would be stepping down.

A photograph of the 41-year-old looking like the Nazi leader went viral on social media on Wednesday.

Media reports also published comments posted on Facebook by Mr Bachmann in which he referred to refugees as "beasts" and "filth".

He later said on Facebook: "I earnestly apologise to all citizens, who felt attacked by my postings. They were ill-considered comments that I wouldn't make in this way today.

"I am sorry that I have damaged the interests of our movement with them and I am acting accordingly."

PEGIDA spokeswoman Kathrin Oertel said that the picture was "satire, which is every citizen's right", but added "sweeping insults against strangers" had gone too far.

The image was posted in September, weeks before he founded PEGIDA in Dresden, eastern Germany.

The group has staged weekly demonstrations in Dresden since this month's terror attacks in Paris, which saw 17 people killed.

Germany's Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel stressed the government's call for people to stay away from PEGIDA protests. He told Bild newspaper: "Anyone in politics who poses as Hitler is either a total idiot or a Nazi."

Mr Bachmann and Ms Oertel have distanced themselves from neo-Nazis who have joined PEGIDA protests.

It comes after rival demonstrations took place in Leipzig on Wednesday night.

Around 15,000 right-wing protesters, from PEGIDA's Leipzig spin-off LEGIDA, were separated by riot police from more than 20,000 anti-racist demonstrators.

More than 4,000 police officers drafted from across Germany were in the city to prevent clashes between the two groups.

The Dresden to Leipzig train line suffered two arson attacks, police told the AFP news agency, triggering long delays. The inner city was also closed to traffic and public transport.

A PEGIDA rally in Dresden was cancelled on Monday after threats were made towards Mr Bachmann.

Senate Votes That 'Climate Change Is No Hoax'

By Sky News US Team

The US Senate has overwhelmingly passed a motion stating that "climate change is real and is not a hoax".

The Republican-controlled house has stopped short of saying humans are to blame.

The motion passed 98-1, with the only No vote from Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi.

Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma, who has questioned the science around climate change, surprisingly approved the motion.

But the senator, who authored the book The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future, said the problem was not man-made.

"Climate is changing and climate has always changed and always will," said Mr Inhofe.

"There is archaeological evidence of that, there is biblical evidence of that, there is historical evidence of that.

"There are some people who are so arrogant to think they are so powerful they can change climate."

The vote was one in a series testing Republicans' stance on global warming just days after two federal agencies declared 2014 the hottest year on record.

Many Republicans have either denied the science of climate change or distanced themselves from it, saying they do not have the expertise to issue an opinion.

During the State of the Union on Tuesday, President Barack Obama said: "I'm not a scientist, either."

Saudi Arabia 'Holds Off Flogging' Raif Badawi

Saudi Arabia has postponed the flogging punishment of a blogger on health grounds for a second time, Amnesty International has said.

The organisation said: "The planned flogging of Raif Badawi will be suspended this Friday after a medical committee assessed that he should not undergo a second round of lashes on health grounds."

The blogger has been sentenced to 1,000 lashes for criticising leading clerics and is serving a 10-year jail sentence.

Badawi, 30, was given the first 50 lashes of his sentence on 9 January outside a mosque in the Red Sea city of Jeddah.

He was expected to face 20 flogging sessions in total, but last Friday his wife said the second round had been delayed on medical grounds.

Ensaf Haidar, who has sought asylum in Canada, also said her husband's case has been referred to the supreme court, possibly paving the way for an appeal.

Amnesty said a committee of several doctors carried out a series of tests at a Jeddah hospital on Wednesday and recommended against a new session of caning.

But "there is no way of knowing whether the Saudi Arabian authorities will disregard the medical advice and allow the flogging to go ahead", according to Said Boumedouha, Amnesty's deputy Middle East and North Africa director.

Amnesty has called for the blogger's immediate and unconditional release, "instead of continuing to torment Raif Badawi by dragging out his ordeal".

Africa: Violent Clashes At Football Tournament

There have been violent clashes between fans and police outside a football stadium hosting an Africa Cup of Nations match.

Witnesses say supporters threw rocks and bottles at officers, who responded by firing tear gas.

It happened at the Bata stadium just as the game between hosts Equatorial Guinea and Burkina Faso was kicking off.

There is only one entrance and fans apparently got frustrated when they could not get in.

Some reportedly did not have tickets.

Supporters have faced delays getting into other tournament venues, with two group matches played back-to-back at a single stadium each night.

Riot police and fans also scuffled before the first games in the city of Ebebiyin on Sunday.

Delays have also been caused by supporters having to undergo Ebola checks before games.

They must all have a temperature check - with those above 38C not allowed in - and must clean their hands with a sanitisation gel before entering the stadium.

The Africa Cup of Nations was due to be staged by Morocco but it pulled out in November because of the Ebola crisis in West Africa.

Equatorial Guinea then stepped in at short notice.

Deadly Shell Attack On Bus Stop In Ukraine

Deadly Shell Attack On Bus Stop In Ukraine

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

At least 13 people have been killed after a bus was hit by shelling in the eastern Ukraine city of Donetsk, say reports.

Ukraine's defence ministry blamed pro-Russian rebels, saying in a statement: "On Thursday, the terrorists shelled a trolleybus in Donetsk.

"The terrorists shelled the passenger transport from city residential areas controlled by the illegal militias."

But Moscow has blamed the attack on Ukrainian troops branding it as a "crime against humanity", aimed at undermining efforts to resolve the bloody conflict, which has claimed the lives of more than 5,000 people.

Following the deadly strike, separatists paraded around 20 captured Ukrainian soldiers through the streets of Donetsk as angry residents hurled pieces of glass and abuse at them.

Kurds: Give Us More Help Or IS Threat Will Grow

By Alistair Bunkall, Defence Correspondent

The Islamic State terror threat to the West will increase if the Kurdish Peshmerga are not given more help fighting the Islamist militants, their commander has warned.

Speaking exclusively to Sky News on the eve of a major conference, Lieutenant General Jabar Manda delivered a message to the 21 foreign ministers gathering in London.

"We need more equipment, we need new weapons and we need the air strikes," he said.

"We need the continuous support and training. We are in need of ammunition. We need new weapons to win this war."

He thanked the British military for their help training his troops and said it has helped the Peshmerga push IS fighters back.

Despite this, 800 Kurdish soldiers have been killed and 4,000 wounded because of insufficient protection and Lt Gen Manda said armoured cars are needed to stop so many soldiers being killed.

He also said that stores of ammunition are decreasing after an early rush of donors.

"IS is an international terrorist group threatening all over the world just like we saw in France. They are threatening America and Britain and other countries," he said.
