A major police operation is under way in France as prosecutors confirmed the second terror attack in the capital in as many days.

Several armed officers were at the scene of a fatal shooting this morning in the south of Paris.

A female police officer, reportedly 25, was killed after she was called to reports of a traffic accident involving a grey Clio at around 7.15am.

A street sweeper was critically injured in the shooting, which is now being treated as a "terrorist act" by the French authorities.

Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said police with heavy armour were seen in Porte de Chatillon shortly afterwards and TV news crews were being pushed back from the area, which was sealed off with tape.

Meanwhile, officers are still hunting for suspects in the deadly gun attack on the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Stranded Outback Driver Dies A Mile From Safety

A 60-year-old man who broke down in the Australian Outback attempted to walk 30 miles to get help but was found dead just over a mile from safety.

The man had been driving to Windidda Station, a cattle ranch about 500 miles inland from Perth, Western Australia, in the height of the country's summer.

Police said he was with a woman when his car broke down on Sunday.

After no car passed by on Sunday night, the man set out on foot across the near desert on Monday morning with what police said was "a small container of water".

The woman remained in the car but also decided to walk on Tuesday morning after no help arrived.

She was rescued by passers-by before she reached Windidda Station and was taken to her destination where she raised the alarm.

The man's body was found late on Wednesday 1.2miles (2km) from Windidda.

A coroner's investigation has been launched to determine how the man died.

Police have previously issued a warning to drivers in the Outback to carry plenty of water in the summer months and to stay with their vehicles if they break down.

In December, a man and his two young sons were found after spending several days stuck in a bog in the Outback in central Queensland.

Wiluna, the biggest population centre in the region, about 100 miles from Windidda, was forecast to have a maximum temperature of 39C (102F) on Thursday.

New Antibiotic Could Help Fight Superbugs

Scientists have discovered an antibiotic which could be used to treat tuberculosis and drug-resistant infections caused by superbugs in the future.

The antibiotic, named teixobactin, has been shown to kill infections in mice without encountering any detectable resistance.

Researchers say it may be six years before the antibiotic is approved for human use, but believe it marks a breakthrough in the fight against bacterial disease.

Teixobactin has been shown to fight resistant strains of tuberculosis and Staphylococcus during laboratory experiments.

The drug works by binding to fatty molecules that are the building blocks for bacterial cell walls.

The binding point is less prone to mutation - the evolutionary process that drives drug resistance.

Kim Lewis, a professor at Northeastern University in the US and co-founder of NovoBiotic Pharmaceuticals, which has patented teixobactin, says the discovery is promising.

"The discovery of this novel compound challenges long-held scientific beliefs and holds great promise for treating an array of menacing infections," he said.

Prof Lewis worked with researchers at Germany's University of Bonn and with Britain's Selcia Limited.

The team's findings have been published in the journal Nature.

There has been a spike in the detection of drug-resistant superbugs over recent years.

The World Health Organisation warned last year of a post-antibiotic era, where basic healthcare becomes dangerous due to the risk of infection during operations.

Scientists have welcomed the finding, but cautioned that human trials of teixobactin would be key to its future success.

"The discovery of a potential new class of antibiotics is good news," said Richard Seabrook of Britain's Wellcome Trust medical charity.

"Screening previously unculturable soil bacteria is a new twist in the search ... and it is encouraging to see this approach yielding results.

"However, we will not know whether teixobactin will be effective in humans until this research is taken ... to clinical trials."

Sony Hackers 'Got Sloppy' And Left Fingerprints

The hackers behind the cyberattack on Sony "got sloppy" and left a trail which leads back to North Korea, the FBI has revealed.

Amid persistent scepticism about whether North Korea's government was responsible for the hacking, FBI director James Comey spoke out at a cyber-security conference.

He said the hackers mistakenly sent messages that were traced to IP addresses used only by North Korea.

Those responsible had tried to use proxy computer servers to disguise their identities and throw investigators off their trail by hiding their true locations.

Mr Comey added: "It was a mistake by them. It made it very clear who was doing this.

"I have very high confidence about this attribution to North Korea, as does the entire intelligence community."

It was first reported on 20 December that the FBI had discovered that computer Internet addresses known to be operated by North Korea were communicating directly with other computers used to control the hacking tools and collect stolen Sony files.

It was apparently in response to the impending release of The Interview, a comedy film which pokes fun at the secretive regime.

North Korea has always denied being involved in the hacking.

Mr Comey said the evidence should undermine continuing scepticism by some cyber experts that individual hackers or a disgruntled insider may have been the culprits.

"They don't have the facts that I have, don't see what I see," he said.

Earlier this week, Sony chief executive  Kazuo Hirai broke his silence about the attack, saying he was proud of his employees for standing against "the extortionist efforts of criminals".

Nurse 'Killed 30 To Show Off CPR Skills'

A German nurse has admitted killing about 30 patients at a hospital where he worked, it has been reported.

The man, identified in court only as Niels H, has been on trial in Oldenburg, northern Germany, since September accused of three murders and two attempted murders.

But on Thursday a court-appointed expert said he had confessed to up to 30 killings during a psychiatric assessment.

The expert told the court the 38-year-old gave the seriously-ill patients an overdose of heart medicine so he could then revive them.

Sixty others survived the attacks, which happened between 2003 and 2005.

Investigators believe the former nurse was motivated by a desire to demonstrate his ability to resuscitate patients.

Oldenburg's district court had already sentenced him to seven-and-a-half years in jail in 2008 for attempted murder.

Paris Policeman Shot In Head As He Pleads For Life

Footage of France's deadliest terror attack for 40 years shows one of the gunmen shoot a policeman in the head at point-blank range.

Three black-clad, heavily-armed men are seen walking from their vehicle near Place de la Bastille in Paris, before a number of shots are fired.

The camera pans to the right to show a police officer lying on the pavement before rolling over to face his approaching attackers.

He is seen raising his hand, apparently pleading for his life.

According to Le Parisien, the officer was heard in one video clip to say: "Voulez-vous me tuer? (Do you want to kill me?)."

The gunman responded: "C'est bon chef."

One of the two men quickens pace as he reaches the injured officer and, without pausing, shoots him in the head.

In another video shot following the attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's offices, gunshots ring out and onlookers run for cover on a rooftop just yards from the scene.

The two gunmen are seen below opening fire.

As some on the rooftop run for cover, panicked voices are heard urging others to "get down".

"Did you see that?" a voice can be heard asking the person filming the scene.

More shots are fired before a witness on the rooftop tells another to "budge up".

The gunshots stop and the men are seen calmly returning to their black Citroen hatchback.

One of them picks up a shoe that had fallen out of the car and they drive off slowly.

Witness Benoit Bringer told French TV channel iTELE: "About a half an hour ago two black-hooded men entered the building with Kalashnikovs (assault rifles).

"A few minutes later we heard lots of shots."

One witness, who declined to give his name, described the attack as like "a movie".

Corden Predicts Chat Show Debut 'Disaster'

By Michael Blair, Entertainment Producer

James Corden has told Sky News he is "terrified beyond belief" of making his debut as host of the US chat show The Late Late Show.

Speaking at a gala screening of his new film, the musical Into The Woods, the actor joked that presenting the daily programme was "going to be a disaster".

The Gavin And Stacey star will take over from comedian Craig Ferguson to present the CBS show in March.

Ahead of his new role he has been awarded an OBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours list for services to Drama.

"I feel very proud to be recognised in such a way but I'm not stupid enough to think for a second that I deserve it and I'm well aware that there are people who deserve it a lot more than I do," he said.

Corden plays the male lead in Disney's adaptation of Broadway musical alongside Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep, who are both nominated for Golden Globe awards for their performances.

On attending the ceremony with her 29th nomination, Streep said: "For me they're important in that now I'm so old I've worked with everyone in the room, so it's like a reunion without being a funeral."

The Golden Globes will be held on Sunday 11 January.

A minute's silence has been held across France to remember the victims of the gun attack at the office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

At midday (1100 GMT), crowds of people stood silently in public squares, schools and outside official buildings. Many shed tears.

After the silence, bells tolled at Paris' Notre Dame cathedral and in churches across the country.

Later there were a number of spontaneous anti-Muslim protests on the streets of Paris, where security has been stepped up.

At a Mass in Rome, Pope Francis asked worshippers to pray for the attack victims and "those who are cruel so that the Lord may change their heart".
