Frances Bean Cobain: I'm Not A Nirvana Fan

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 09 April 2015 | 23.31

Kurt Cobain's daughter Frances Bean has admitted she does not like her late father's music.

The 22-year-old was speaking publicly for the first time ahead of the release of a documentary about the Nirvana frontman.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Cobain was asked about what it is like listening to her father's songs.

"I don't really like Nirvana that much. Sorry, promotional people, Universal. I'm more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre," she said.

Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck covers the life of the 27-year-old and his death in 1994 and is the first film to be made with the co-operation of his family.

Despite being just a baby when her father killed himself, Cobain says she has come to understand why he made the decision.

"Kurt got to the point where he eventually had to sacrifice every bit of who he was to his art, because the world demanded it of him. I think that was one of the main triggers as to why he felt he didn't want to be here and everyone would be happier without him.

"In reality, if he had lived, I would have had a dad. And that would have been an incredible experience."

The making of the documentary has reunited Cobain with her mother Courtney Love - the pair were photographed together on a red carpet in January.

They were reportedly estranged for around five years following a feud.

Cobain said she was 15 when she realised that being the musician's daughter was "inescapable".

"He became even bigger after he died than he was when he was alive. You don't think it could have gotten any bigger. But it did."

:: Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck is in cinemas from 10 April.

Iran Warning On Final Nuclear Agreement

Iran has warned it will not sign a final nuclear deal unless the six major powers lift all sanctions imposed on the country.

"We will not sign any deal unless all sanctions are lifted on the same day," President Hassan Rouhani said in a televised speech on Thursday.

"We want a win-win deal for all parties involved in the nuclear talks."

A tentative deal reached last week between Iran and the six powers on curbing the country's nuclear programme has revived hopes of an end to sanctions.

Iran wants them lifted altogether and at once - but the United States made it clear on Monday sanctions would have to be phased out gradually.

Under the accord reached in Switzerland last Thursday, Iran would reduce its reserves of enriched uranium, which some nations fear could be used to produce a nuclear bomb.

It would also dismantle nearly 13,000 centrifuges and allow "invasive" inspections of its nuclear plants by international bodies.

In return, many sanctions would be lifted, providing £100bn of relief to the Iranian economy.

President Barack Obama hailed the deal as "our best bet", while Mr Rouhani said it would "remain in the historic memory of the Iranian nation".

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it would give Iran a "free path to the bomb" and could lead to the destruction of his country.

In a statement, he said: "Israel demands that any final agreement with Iran will include a clear and unambiguous Iranian commitment to Israel's right to exist."

Iran has always maintained its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.

Iran and the six powers - the US, Germany, France, Britain, Russia and China - are expected to meet shortly for more discussions.

Diplomats have said tough negotiations lie ahead of the deadline to reach a final agreement on 30 June.

Mr Rouhani came to power in a landslide election victory two years ago, pledging to bring decades of international isolation to an end.

IS Supporters Hack Into France's TV5Monde

One of France's largest TV stations, TV5Monde, says it has been the victim of a cyberattack by people connected with the Islamic State group.

Broadcasts were brought to a halt and the company's websites and social networks were hijacked with the words "Cybercaliphate" and "Je suIS IS" plastered over the front.

The international TV network, broadcast in more than 200 countries worldwide and based in Paris, was off air for three hours overnight, director general Yves Bigot said.

Systems had been "severely damaged" by the "unprecedented attack", Mr Bigot explained.

The hackers posted documents on the company's Facebook page claiming they were identity cards and CVs of relatives of French soldiers involved in anti-IS operations.

The hackers also posted threats against the troops.

"Soldiers of France, stay away from the Islamic State! You have the chance to save your families, take advantage of it," read one message.

"The CyberCaliphate continues its cyberjihad against the enemies of Islamic State," the message added.

Mr Bigot said TV broadcasts were likely to take hours, if not days, to get back to normal.

Speaking at the time, he said: "We are no longer able to broadcast any of our channels. Our websites and social media sites are no longer under our control and are all displaying claims of responsibility by Islamic State."

The hackers also accused President Francois Hollande of committing "an unforgivable mistake" by getting involved in "a war that serves no purpose".

US Soldier Killed In Afghan Insider Attack

An Afghan soldier was shot dead after opening fire on American troops - killing one and wounding several other people.

The attack was believed to be an attempt to assassinate a senior US diplomat, sources told Sky News.

The Afghan soldier opened fire after a meeting between Afghan provincial leaders and Donald Yamamoto, a former ambassador to Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti, in the compound of the provincial governor in Jalalabad.

According to sources, a convoy was leaving the compound when the Afghan soldier shot at the last car using a vehicle-mounted machine gun.

Mr Yamamoto, who was recently appointed as special advisor to Afghanistan, had already left the compound by this stage and was unharmed.

The American soldier, who has not been named, was part of a unit training and advising Afghan forces

General Fazel Ahmad Sherzad, police chief for eastern Nangarhar province, said American troops immediately returned fire, killing the Afghan soldier.

An Afghan interpreter working with the US troops had previously said no American soldiers had died in the incident.

It is the second insider attack in the country this year, after an Afghan soldier killed three American contractors on 29 January.

The Western-backed Afghan government's 13-year war against the insurgents has intensified as both sides seek to strengthen their positions ahead of possible peace talks.

However, the Taliban did not immediately claim responsibility for the latest attack and many such attacks are believed to stem from personal grudges and cultural misunderstandings.

EU Was 'Looking Into German Air Safety Issues'

European Union authorities began looking into German airline safety procedures regarding "a number of issues" long before the Germanwings crash, it has been reported.

An EU official, who asked not be named, said the issues included health checks on pilots, although he did not elaborate further.

It has emerged Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz, who deliberately flew his Airbus A320 into the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board, had suffered depression.

Investigators have also said they found a sick note for the day of the crash at Lubitz's home, but it was never given to the airline.

He was reportedly being treated by psychologists and neurologists and authorities believe he was trying to hide this from his employers.

Doctors working for the German aviation industry have suggested that pilots should undergo more extensive medical checks after the tragedy.

"We are calling for more frequent and comprehensive laboratory tests for pilots," Hans-Werner Teichmueller of the German Pilots' Doctors Association told Welt newspaper.

"We need to see results that can also show traces of psychotropic drugs and narcotics."

The annual physical taken by pilots only includes tests of urine, haemoglobin levels and in some cases blood sugar.

The EU official told the Associated Press that the examination of German procedures followed a routine inspection by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

He said that last November EU authorities "had asked for clarification to make sure all airlines actively observe rules".

Legal Experts Urge UN To Ban Killer Robots

Killer robots should be banned before they can be developed, the United Nations has been told.

Current international law means that military commanders that use fully autonomous weapons would escape liability for deaths caused, a report by Harvard Law School says.

The report - called The Lack of Accountability for Killer Robots - was co-authored by Human Rights Watch and released ahead of a UN meeting in Geneva on 13 April.

The current generation of drones always has an individual overseeing their actions and deciding whether to fire a missile, a clause used to defend them by the likes of the Ministry of Defence.

But newer machines may be able to select their own targets, a move which concerns some human rights campaigners and legal experts.

The report says: "Fully autonomous weapons do not yet exist but technology is moving in their direction, and precursors are already in use or development.

"For example, many countries use weapons defence systems - such as the Israeli Iron Dome and the US Phalanx and C-RAM - that are programmed to respond automatically to threats from incoming munitions."

It adds: "The lack of meaningful human control places fully autonomous weapons in an ambiguous and troubling position.

"On the one hand, while traditional weapons are tools in the hands of human beings, fully autonomous weapons, once deployed, would make their own determinations about the use of lethal force."

The report authors call for the development and production of such weapons to be banned internationally.

Obama Wants End To LGBT Conversion Therapy

By Sky News US Team

Barack Obama has called for an end to psychiatric therapies that seek to change the sexual orientation of gay, lesbian and transgender youth.

The White House put out a statement in response to a petition calling for Mr Obama to back a law to ban conversion therapy, which is supported by some socially conservative organizations and religious doctors.

The petition was started following the suicide in December of 17-year-old transgender youth Leelah Alcorn, who died after her parents forced her to attend conversion therapy, pulled her out of school and isolated her in an attempt to change her gender identity.

"The overwhelming scientific evidence demonstrates that conversion therapy, especially when it is practiced on young people, is neither medically nor ethically appropriate and can cause substantial harm," said the statement, written by senior adviser Valerie Jarrett.

"As part of our dedication to protecting America's youth, this Administration supports efforts to ban the use of conversion therapy for minors," she added.

On 27 December 2014, Leelah wrote a suicide note, posted it on Tumblr and then walked in front of a semi-trailer.

Judge And Lawyer Among Three Killed In Court

A man has been arrested after a judge and lawyer were among three people shot dead in a court in Milan, the Italian Interior Minister has confirmed.

The man was found by police in the town of Vimercate, 25km (15 miles) from Milan, after fleeing on a motorbike and is being held in a military police barracks, Angelino Alfano said.

He was named in reports as Claudio Giardiello, a defendant in a bankruptcy case at the Palace of Justice, which is in the historic centre of the city, a few streets from its cathedral and main shops.

The gunman shot dead his lawyer and one of his co-defendants first, before walking through the building, going down one floor and killing the judge, prosecutor Edmondo Bruti Liberati said.

The president of Milan's appeals court, Giovanni Canzio, named bankruptcy judge Fernando Ciampi as the one who had been killed.

The ANSA news agency identified the lawyer as Lorenzo Alberto Claris Appiani.

A second co-defendant was seriously injured, Mr Bruti Liberati said.

A fourth person was found dead in the court buildings with no apparent sign of injury, emergency services said.

The area around the court was cordoned off after the shooting and people were initially told to remain inside.

Court employees barricaded themselves inside their offices and took cover under their desks while police searched for the gunman.

A person speaking from inside the president's office at the court told Sky News shortly after the shooting that they had been locked in a room and instructed not to leave.

Women were later seen leaving the building first followed by men, after having their identification checked.

The gunman fired "at least three or four shots", according to lawyer Marcello Ilia.

"We tried to find out what was going on. There were suddenly lots of police officers who told us not to leave the room, they shut us in," he said.

"After a few minutes we came out. They told us someone in a suit and tie was armed and at large in the court."

It was unclear how an armed man gained access to the building as visitors must pass through metal detectors.

Ambassador Summoned Over Falklands Oil Threat

Argentina claims three British companies drilling for oil and gas in the Falklands do not have the right to be there and has threatened to prosecute them.

The threat was made by president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner in a speech on the 33rd anniversary of the Falklands Conflict.

She vowed to take action against UK oil companies if they drilled in waters around the islands.

Sky sources say Argentina's UK ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Office by Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond. It is understood that Britain considered the comments to be "unreasonable" and the ambassador was given a "dressing down".

The three British firms involved in oil and gas exploration in the Falklands are Premier Oil, Rockhopper and Falkland Oil and Gas.

They hold stakes in the Zebedee well and want to test for oil and gas in another well in the North Falkland Basin.

They are set to begin drilling and the results are expected at the end of the month.

However, the Argentine government is firmly opposed to the move and has threatened to take them to court.

It warned it "could end with an Argentine judge issuing an arrest warrant against those who operate illegally in Argentine waters".

The dispute comes after the British government announced plans to spend £280m over the next 10 years on renewing and strengthening Falklands forces.

President Fernandez responded by saying Britain should concentrate on fighting poverty instead of increasing the amount spent on defence.

"What a paradox," she said, "when there are more than one million Britons eating at the food banks they have had to open in one of the most powerful countries in the world."

"Don't worry. Don't spend another pound sterling on defending the Malvinas," she added, using the Argentine name for the Falklands.

"Spend your money feeding the English, on providing jobs for your young people and a better quality of life for the British, because we are not a threat to anyone."

HSBC Tax Scandal: France Starts Criminal Probe

HSBC has expressed outrage at being placed on €1bn bail amid a criminal investigation in France into historical tax issues.

The UK-listed bank said it was informed on Wednesday that French magistrates were examining the "conduct of its Swiss private bank in 2006 and 2007 for alleged tax-related offences."

Its statement said the court's decision is "without legal basis and bail is unwarranted and excessive".

The bank added that it intended to appeal and "defend itself vigorously in any future proceedings".

Activities at the private bank are being examined in several other countries including Germany and Argentina in the wake of the publication of stolen files.

The papers claimed the Swiss operation had helped clients in more than 200 countries, including Britain, evade and avoid tax.

The accounts in question were said to contain £77bn ($119bn).

HSBC chief executive Stuart Gulliver apologised earlier this year for past practices at the Swiss arm.

He and chairman Douglas Flint told a committee of MPs in February they had completed a series of reforms to help restore trust and confidence.

Argentina last month stepped up its tax evasion row with HSBC by demanding it repatriates $3.5bn (£2.32bn) of cash allegedly moved from the country to its Swiss private bank.

The country's tax authorities issued the request weeks after the Central Bank of Argentina temporarily suspended HSBC Bank Argentina's operations of transferring money and assets abroad for a period of 30 days.

Argentina accuses HSBC of aiding more than 4,000 clients to evade taxes by shifting assets offshore.

HSBC Argentina denied the claim - insisting it respected Argentine law.

Lauren Bacall Memorabilia Auction Makes £2.4m

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 02 April 2015 | 23.31

A two-day auction of belongings at Hollywood star Lauren Bacall's Manhattan apartment has raised £2.4m ($3.6m).

Auctioneers Bonhams said as many as 1,500 bidders tried to get their hands on the film and theatre legend's artwork, furniture, jewellery and possessions on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Objects associated with her first husband, Humphrey Bogart, went above their estimates including a steamer trunk that was bought for £32,000 ($47,500).

Other highlights of the sale, which was of items in her apartment in The Dakota building off Central Park, included an 1836 hand-coloured Audubon engraving called American White Pelican which made £117,000 ($173,000).

Two paintings by Albert Edward York, Landscape With Trees and A Country Fence, sold for £108,000 ($161,000), setting an auction record for the American artist.

Bonhams also sold two Henry Moore sculptures from her collection in November, bringing the final sale result to £3.4m ($5m).

Bacall, the star of films such as The Big Sleep and Key Largo, died in August at age 89.

Investigation Into Britons Held On Syria Border

Counter terrorism officers have launched an investigation into nine people arrested by Turkish authorities for trying to cross illegally into Syria.

Officers from the Greater Manchester Police and North West Counter Terrorism are working with Rochdale Borough Council, local partners and faith leaders to establish why the family were found at the border.

The five adults, aged 21, 22, 22, 24 and 47, as well as four children aged one, three, eight and 11, are believed to be related and currently live in Rochdale.

Assistant Chief Constable Ian Wiggett said: "What is obviously concerning is why a family were seemingly attempting to take very young and vulnerable children into a warzone; such a volatile and dangerous environment is no place for them whatsoever.

"We have commenced an investigation to try and establish their reasons for travel and as this is a live investigation - which is very much in its infancy - we are not in a position to comment further.

"One of our primary concerns is the safety and welfare of the young children and we are working with partners to ensure a full safeguarding strategy is in place upon their return to the UK."

It comes as the nine Britons are expected to be deported from Turkey on Thursday.

They were held by Turkish officials at a military outpost at Ogulpinar, in the south of the country.

Footage released earlier on Thursday showed the Britons arriving at a police station in Southern Hatay province.

Turkish MP Mehmet Ali Ediboglu, speaking on Wednesday, said: "They are being held at a paramilitary outpost. Probably, they will be deported to their country tomorrow."

It is unclear why the Britons were trying to cross the border.

Thousands of foreigners have joined the ranks of Islamic State and other radical groups in Syria and Iraq, many of them crossing through Turkey.

UK security services alone estimate 600 Britons have gone to Syria or Iraq to join militant groups.

Turkey has faced criticism for not doing enough to control its southeastern borders.

The country has in turn accused European nations of failing to prevent would-be jihadists from travelling in the first place.

Among Britons thought to have travelled to Syria are Bethnal Green Academy pupils Shamima Begum, Amira Abase and Kadiza Sultana. They are believed to be in the Syrian city of Raqqa, an IS stronghold.

The girls were last seen on CCTV at a bus station in Istanbul on 17 February.

Pizzeria Closes After Rejecting Gay Weddings

By Sky News US Team

The owners of an Indiana pizzeria who provoked uproar after refusing to cater for gay weddings say they have shut down.

The restaurant sparked a furious backlash after becoming the first business in the Midwestern state to invoke its new religious-objection law in denying service to gay couples.

An Indiana girls' golf coach is facing a criminal investigation after she tweeted a suggestion that the restaurant be burned down.

Opponents of the Indiana law, and a similar one in Arkansas, have warned the legislation would spur discrimination against LGBT people.

Amid national outcry, Indiana lawmakers unveiled an amended bill on Thursday morning, a week after they enacted the original version.

Arkansas is expected to follow suit.

Memories Pizza co-owner Crystal O'Connor told TheBlaze, a news network run by conservative talk show host Glenn Beck: "I don't know if we will re-open, or if we can, if it's safe to re-open.

"We're in hiding basically, staying in the house."

As well as a flood of critical online reviews on Yelp, the restaurant reportedly received a number of threatening messages.

Walkerton Police Department in Indiana told Sky News they are investigating Jess Dooley for possible harassment, intimidation and threats.

On Tuesday, the Concord High School coach allegedly tweeted: "Who's going to Walkerton, IN to burn down #memoriespizza w me?" The post has since been deleted.

She has also reportedly been suspended by the school.

One Yelp reviewer said: "Jesus dined with thieves and hookers. You really think He's gonna worry if gay people eat your pizza?"

Other contributors wondered who would buy pizza to cater for a wedding anyway.

But a GoFundMe page set up for the restaurant has raised nearly $100,000 (£67,500) from sympathisers.

On Wednesday, Memories co-owner Kevin O'Connor said he would serve a gay customer in his store, but would not provide food for a same-sex wedding.

"That lifestyle is something they choose. I choose to be heterosexual," Mr O'Conner told ABC 57.

"They choose to be homosexual. Why should I be beat over the head to go along with something they choose?"

On Thursday, Arkansas' legislature was working on a new, watered-down version of its Religious Freedom Restoration Act, passed on Tuesday, after the Republican governor bowed to pressure not to sign it.

Some 20 US states and the federal government have passed so-called religious freedom laws, which allow individuals to sue the government if they believe their religious rights have been violated.

But Indiana and Arkansas' versions go further than most by covering private business transactions, say legal analysts.

Plane Crash: Co-Pilot 'Researched Suicide'

The co-pilot accused of deliberately flying a plane into a mountainside in the French Alps researched suicide methods in the days before the crash, according to German prosecutors.

A tablet computer found at Andreas Lubitz's home in Dusseldorf revealed searches had been made about "ways to commit suicide" and "cockpit doors and their security provisions", investigators said in a statement.

"The browser history wasn't erased, in particular the search terms called up on this device in the period from March 16 to March 23 were able to be retraced."

It provides the first evidence that the 27-year-old's actions may have been premeditated.

The revelation comes as investigators said they had found the second black box from the Germanwings plane, which crashed nine days ago, killing all 150 people on board.

The second black box is the plane's data recorder and contains readings for nearly every instrument. It is hoped it will unearth more clues about the disaster.

The first voice recorder suggested that Lubitz deliberately flew the Airbus A320 into the mountainside.

Earlier it was revealed mobile phones have been discovered amongst the debris of flight 4U 9525, which was heading for Dusseldorf from Barcelona.

So far the devices have not produced any further insight as to what happened but it is hoped they will on full examination.

It comes after French magazine Paris Match and German tabloid Bild said they had seen a video of the final moments of the Airbus recorded on a mobile phone.

Paris Match, which has not published the video, reported: "The sounds of the screaming passengers made it perfectly clear that they were aware of what was about to happen to them."

Meanwhile, the German government has announced it is setting up a task force to examine safety issues such as the cockpit door mechanism and pilots' mental health.

The move follows a meeting between transport minister Alexander Dobrindt and the German Aviation Association, which represents airlines.

Mr Dobrindt said: "We want to look at psychological criteria and procedures.

"We also want to look at the question - how do we recognise any indication of psychological issues."

Lufthansa chief executive Carsten Spohr said on Wednesday it will take a "long time" to fully establish what led to the crash, despite "learning more every day about the causes".

The day before, French President Francois Hollande said all 150 victims will be identified by the end of the week.

This contradicted an earlier report in Bild that said relatives may have to wait much longer, with no guarantees their loved ones will be found.

The violence with which the Airbus smashed into the French Alps has severely hampered the DNA identification process.

To date not a single body has been found intact.

NYPD Cop Who Berated Uber Driver Is Reassigned

By Sky News US Team

A New York police detective who was heard on video berating an Uber driver will be transferred from the police anti-terrorism division.

Patrick Cherry was also stripped of his gun and badge after the video went viral and caused embarrassment to police.

"No good cop should watch that without a wince. Because all good cops know that officer just made their jobs a little bit harder," Police Commissioner William Bratton said.

"In any kind of encounter, discourtesy like that and language like that is unacceptable."

Mr Cherry pulled over the Uber driver on Monday in Manhattan.

It is not clear exactly what spurred the traffic stop, but Mr Cherry is seen on the video accusing the driver of committing various traffic violations while the detective tried to park his car.

Mr Cherry swears, shouts at the driver and insults his accented English as the driver gives compliant responses, calling the detective "sir" and apologising at one point for interrupting to say, "OK".

"I don't care what you have to say. Do you understand that?" the detective says at one point.

At another point Mr Cherry asks: "How long have you been in this country?"

"The only reason you're not in handcuffs going to jail ... is because I have things to do," the officer yells.

"This isn't important enough for me. You're not important enough."

The three-and-a-half minute video appeared to have been captured by a passenger in the car, who commiserated with the driver when the officer had stepped away.

There has been no public comment from Mr Cherry.

City Detectives' Endowment Association President Michael J Palladino called Mr Cherry "a person of good character and an excellent detective".

"He really should not be judged by one isolated incident," he said.

Woman Charged After Saying Dog Shot Boyfriend

By Sky News US Team

The girlfriend of an off-duty cop has been charged with murder after claiming he had been shot when the gun accidentally discharged as she tried to remove it from her dog's mouth.

Tyaina Finch was charged with murder and aggravated assault in the death of Mark Hudson in Darby Township, near Philadelphia, at the weekend.

District Attorney Jack Whelan said Finch's statements to police had been "inconsistent".

He described the couple's relationship as "tumultuous" and said officers had been called to the home before for domestic disturbances.

"We believe she acted on this particular day with specific intent to kill," he said.

According to authorities, Finch initially said she saw their dog with a gun on the floor and took the gun from the dog's mouth, and as she turned toward Mr Hudson the gun went off.

She then changed her version to say she had fired the gun in self-defence after Mr Hudson attacked her, police say.

Mr Hudson had worked part-time for the Darby Borough Police Department for four years.

Miracle Dog Survives Being Hit By Car And Hammer

By Sky News US Team

A stray dog has survived being hit by a car, clubbed in the head and left for dead in a ditch in Washington state.

The one-year-old bully breed mix eventually showed up sickly and covered in dirt at a nearby farm, and has been recovering with the help of good Samaritans and veterinarians at Washington State University, news reports say.

The dog used to roam the streets getting scraps of food from people in Moses Lake, a farm town about 100 miles west of Spokane.

About a month ago, she was struck by a car. Then things got worse: Someone cracked her in the head with a hammer and placed her in a box in a farm field.

But the dog somehow survived and was discovered at a nearby farm with a dislocated jaw, leg injuries and a caved-in sinus cavity.

"I'm assuming that the person who did this meant to put her out of her misery," said Sara Mellado, who learned about the dog's plight on Facebook and took the animal into her Moses Lake home.

She named the dog Theia.

"Considering everything that she's been through, she's incredibly gentle and loving," Ms Mellado told The Associated Press.

"She's a true miracle dog, and she deserves a good life."

Theia is receiving care at WSU's Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Pullman.

Ms Mellado has raised another some $13,000 (£8,700) for the surgery to repair nasal-bone fractures through crowdfunding website gofundme, and the procedure is scheduled to take place later this month.

At Least 56 Dead As Russian Trawler Sinks

A Russian trawler with an international crew of 132 people has sunk in the Pacific, killing at least 56 crew.

The boat is said to have gone down so quickly that its captain, who drowned, did not have time to send a distress signal.

Emergency services said 63 crew members were rescued and 13 people are still missing.

More than 25 nearby fishing boats helped to rescue the crew members in the Sea of Okhotsk off the Kamchatka Peninsula, in eastern Russia.

The Interfax news agency said drifting ice in the chilly Pacific waters may have played a role in the 26-year-old ship sinking.

Meanwhile, Russia's TASS news agency cited an official as saying the crew might have violated safety rules by exceeding the capacity of cargo storage.

"At this time we do not know what might have caused the tragedy," said Viktor Klepikov, from the rescue team.

Besides Russia, Interfax said crew members came from Latvia, Ukraine, Myanmar and Vanuatu.

President Vladimir Putin sent his condolences and ordered all necessary measures to help the survivors, some of whom have hypothermia.

Russia has a poor air, road and water safety record, with negligence and corruption often to blame for accidents.

In 2011, an overcrowded tourist boat sank in the Volga River, killing nearly 130 people in one of the worst post-Soviet ship disasters.

At Least 70 Dead As Hostages Taken At College

Hostages have been taken by masked terrorists who have killed at least 70 people after storming a university in eastern Kenya, the country's interior minister said.

Two police officers are among the dead following heavy gunfire and explosions in a campus building at Garissa University.

At least 79 others have been wounded.

Interior minister Joseph Nkaissery claimed the siege was almost over.

"We are mopping up the area," he told reporters.

Somalia's al Shabaab militant group has claimed responsibility for the pre-dawn attack.

"We sorted people out and released the Muslims," said spokesman Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab.

"There are many dead bodies of Christians inside the building. We are also holding many Christians alive. Fighting still goes on inside the college."

Two of the militants have been killed and one arrested as he tried to flee, according to Kenya's interior ministry.

The Red Cross counted 50 students that had been safely freed, while the interior ministry said 500 of 815 students had been accounted for.

Student Michael Bwana, who managed to flee, said most of the hostages were girls.

Kenya Police Chief Joseph Boinet told reporters that gunmen forced their way into the university at 5.30am by shooting at the guards manning the main gate.

"The gunmen shot indiscriminately while inside the university compound," he said.

"Police... engaged the gunmen in a fierce shootout; however, the attackers retreated and gained entry into one of the hostels."

A gunfight between security services and the perpetrators lasted several hours, according to the Red Cross.

The area has been sealed off and the army called in to try and "flush out" the attackers.

Students reported seeing five masked gunmen.

The authorities have offered a $215,000 (£145,000) reward for a man called Mohamed Mohamud, who has been linked to the attack.

Collins Wetangula, the vice chairman of the student union, said he was preparing to take a shower when he heard gunshots coming from a dorm.

"All I could hear were footsteps and gunshots; nobody was screaming because they thought this would lead the gunmen to know where they are," he said.

"The gunmen were saying sisi ni al-Shabab (Swahili for we are al-Shabab).

"If you were a Christian you were shot on the spot. With each blast of the gun I thought I was going to die."

Grace Kai, a student at a neighbouring college, said there had been warnings of an imminent attack.

"Some strangers had been spotted in Garissa town and were suspected to be terrorists," she said.

"Then on Monday our college principal told us... that strangers had been spotted in our college. On Tuesday we were released to go home, and our college closed, but the campus remained in session, and now they have been attacked."

Kenya's northern and eastern regions, which border Somalia, have been most affected by attacks blamed on al Shabaab Islamists from Somalia.

The militants, who have links to al Qaeda, have vowed to take retribution against Kenya for sending its troops to Somalia.

Al Shabaab was responsible for the deadly attack in 2013 on the Westgate shopping mall. At least 67 people were killed when a group of gunmen rampaged through the centre in Nairobi.

On the latest raid, Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta said: "I extend condolences to the families of those who have perished in this attack. We continue to pray for the quick recovery of the injured, and the safe rescue of those held hostage."

He added that 10,000 police recruits would be fast-tracked following the attack.

Teenager Kills Brother And Himself Over Food

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 26 Maret 2015 | 23.31

By Sky News US Team

A teenager in Florida has fatally shot his six-year-old brother, wounded his 16-year-old brother and then turned the gun on himself during an argument over food.

The three brothers were home alone and started squabbling over dinner when the 13-year-old grabbed a handgun and shot his two siblings before killing himself, police in Pasco County said.

Officers received a call about the shooting at 6.19pm local time on Wednesday in the city of Hudson, some 45 miles (72km) north of Tampa.

The older brother was taken to a hospital and his injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said in a statement.

The names of the children were not released by authorities.

"This is a horrific scene," Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said.

"This is a nightmare when you hear about the ages of these boys, a six-year-old that was probably playing in his room, an argument over food and he lost his life."

The Tampa Bay Times said that the children's mother was at work and a fourth son, who is 18 years old, was not at the house.

By Sherine Tadros, Middle East Correspondent, in Cairo

At least 18 people have been killed in Yemen as a result of Saudi-led airstrikes against Iran-backed Shia rebels, known as the Houthis, according to Houthi media quoting health officials.

Warplanes launched attacks on Sana'a airport and its al Dulaimi military airbase shortly after the Saudi ambassador in Washington announced the action.

They have reportedly committed 100 fighter jets and 150,000 troops to the operation, called Decisive Storm.

They have also hit Houthi bases and installations in the south of the country as well as a residential area in Sana'a.

The military intervention came after Yemen's President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi asked the Arab League, meeting this weekend in the Egyptian resort Sharm el Sheikh, to act quickly to stop the Houthi advance in the south of the country where he had taken refuge.

Amnesty Accuses Palestinians Of War Crimes

By Tom Rayner, Middle East Reporter

Amnesty International has accused Palestinian armed groups of carrying out "war crimes" during last summer's 50-day conflict in Gaza.

The report entitled Unlawful And Deadly condemned militants, including the armed wing of Hamas, for using "inherently indiscriminate" rockets and mortars to "kill or injure civilians".

"In launching these attacks, they displayed a flagrant disregard for international humanitarian law and for the consequences of their violations on civilians in both Israel and the Gaza Strip," said Amnesty International's Middle East Director Philip Luther.

"The devastating impact of Israeli attacks on Palestinian civilians during the conflict is undeniable, but violations by one side in a conflict can never justify violations by their opponents", he added.

Citing UN data, the report claims 4,881 rockets and 1,753 mortars were fired towards Israel during the last conflict, with 243 intercepted by the Iron Dome defence system, and 31 landing inside Gaza.

A total of 224 rockets and mortars hit residential areas in Israel.

Six Israeli civilians, including a four-year-old child, and 67 soldiers were killed.

UN figures say more than 2,250 Palestinians were killed, of which 1,585 were civilians, including 538 children.

An Amnesty report published last November accused Israel's military of displaying "callous indifference" to the need to avoid harm to civilians in Gaza.

But the latest publication claims Palestinian armed groups must also take some responsibility due to their decisions to operate in or near civilian areas.

"None of the violations by Palestinian armed groups absolved Israeli forces of their obligations under international humanitarian law," it said.

'Chilling Revelations' Of Plane's Final Moments

The co-pilot of the Germanwings plane that crashed in the Alps intentionally sent the jet into its doomed descent.

Here are the details of the Airbus A320's final moments that emerged at a news conference given by Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin.

:: Mr Robin said it appears the co-pilot, who was a German national and who had never been flagged as a terrorist, appeared to want to "destroy the plane".

:: Prior to the cabin being locked, there was "normal" conversation between the pilot and co-pilot for the first 20 minutes of the flight, which had taken off from Barcelona in Spain bound for Dusseldorf in Germany.

:: The co-pilot's responses, although initially courteous, became "curt" when the pilot started the mid-flight briefing on the planned landing of the plane.

:: The pilot is heard asking the co-pilot to take over and the sound of a chair being pushed back and a door being closed is heard.

:: The co-pilot was left on his own in charge of the plane, and it is then that he uses the flight monitoring system to start the descent of the plane.

:: The co-pilot did not say a word once the pilot left the cockpit. "It was absolute silence in the cockpit," said Mr Robin.

:: All that could be heard is the co-pilot's breathing. Mr Robin said the co-pilot was breathing normally. "It wasn't the breath of somebody who was struggling. He didn't say a single word. Total silence."

:: Several cries from the pilot can be heard, asking to get in.

:: He identifies himself through the intercom system, but there is no answer. He knocks on the door and asks for it to be opened, but again there is no answer.

:: Pounding could be heard on the door during the final minutes as alarms sounded. Finally the sound of an impact is heard.

:: The 144 passengers only realised at the last moment what was happening. Screams were only heard in the last moments of the recording, before impact. Mr Robin said: "We only hear screams at the very end. Death was instant. It hit the mountain at 700km (430mph) an hour."

:: Several calls from the control tower to the plane went unanswered, as did communications from other aircraft in the area.

:: The plane could have glided before the moment of impact. There was no distress signal, no Mayday and no answer despite numerous calls to the plane.

:: The co-pilot, who has been named as 28-year-old Andreas Lubitz, had a few hundred hours flying time on the aircraft.

:: There is no indication the crash is a terrorist act, Mr Robin said: "But obviously we will see how we will proceed."

:: Pressed on the co-pilot's religion, Mr Robin said: "I don't think this is where this lies. I don't think we will get any answers there."

:: The bodies of the victims are being retrieved by helicopter and put on stretchers and taken to a nearby unit where post-mortems are being carried out and DNA testing undertaken. The process could take more than a week.

Alps Crash Co-Pilot 'Wanted To Destroy Plane'

The co-pilot of a plane which crashed in the Alps activated the descent button and refused to open the cockpit door to the pilot.

Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin says the co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz, 28, was alone at the controls of the Germanwings flight and "intentionally" sent the plane into the doomed descent.

He said that the crew member - who won a Federal Aviation Authority award in 2013 - wanted to "destroy the plane".

He said: "We assume the (captain) went to the loo or something. The co-pilot is on his own in charge of the plane, and it is while he is alone that he uses the flight monitoring system which starts the descent of the plane."

The flight monitoring system cannot be accidentally triggered, he added.

"We hear several cries from the captain asking to get in. Through the intercom system he identifies himself - but there is no answer. He knocks on the door and asks for it to be opened - but there is no answer."

The plane ploughed into the side of a mountain at around 430mph, killing all of those on board instantly.

"I think the victims only realised at the last moment because on the recording you only hear the screams literally on the last moments of the recording."

Mr Robin said Mr Lubitz was a German national but does not know his ethnicity or religion.

He said there is nothing to indicate that this was a terrorism-related event. He said he would not speculate on whether the co-pilot had committed suicide.

He said the families are in a "state of shock" and "can't believe what has happened".

Mr Lubitz is understood to have joined the airline in 2013 straight after training.

Breathing could be heard from the cockpit and was normal, which has led investigators to believe he was conscious at the time. Other than that, the cockpit was "silent".

There was no contact made with air traffic control in the final eight minutes of the flight.

Some 500 people are now working on the investigation, which is hampered by the remote location of the crash.

Each body must be removed by helicopter as the mountainside is very steep. The recovery process is expected to take a week.

Relatives of the co-pilot are in France and being kept away from grieving relatives, who are in France near the scene.

Carsten Spohr, the chief executive of Germanwings parent company Lufthansa said: "Not in our worst nightmare could we imagine something like this happening."

He added that cockpit personnel are selected carefully and go through rigorous checks.

The principal of Joseph Koenig High School in Haltern, Germany, which lost 16 students and two teachers in the crash, says the state governor called him to say the cause "was without a doubt suicide."

Ulrich Wessel said: "I gave this information to my colleagues immediately, and they were just as stunned as I was.

"The President looks forward to continuing this conversation with the Holy Father during his first visit to the United States as Pope," it said.

Francis is already scheduled to address the annual UN General Assembly of world leaders on 25 September.

Scaffolding Collapse Leaves 14 Workers Dead

At least 14 people have been killed and 28 others injured after scaffolding collapsed at a building site in central Vietnam.

Hundreds of police and rescue workers are still searching through the rubble from the accident in Ha Tinh province.

It is not known if other workers were trapped in the rubble, said the deputy police chief in the province, Bui Dinh Quang.

All of the victims were Vietnamese subcontractors hired to work on a seaport breakwater project, he said.

An investigation into the cause of the collapse is under way.

Survivor Dinh Ninh Dan said the workers were cleaning a frame for a giant concrete block for the breakwater when the collapse happened.

There were more than 40 workers on the scaffolding at the time.

The 27-year-old said nearly an hour after they started work the scaffolding shook twice.

This panicked many workers, who began running to an elevator before someone said there was not a problem.

Speaking from Ky Anh General Hospital, Mr Dan said: "After 10 more minutes, the scaffolding which was about 20 metres (65 feet) high, suddenly collapsed.

"I quickly grabbed an iron bar but fell free.

"People were screaming, calling for help from the rubble.

"I was very lucky to survive."

Dr Hoang Song Hao said 19 workers were being treated at the hospital, 15 of them with serious injuries.

The Son Duong seaport where the accident happened is part of the Vung Ang economic zone where Taiwan's Formosa Plastics Corporation is building a multi-billion dollar steel complex.

Fatal accidents are common at construction sites in Vietnam, where labour and safety regulations are sometimes ignored.

Iran And Saudi Arabia Battle It Out In Yemen

Iran And Saudi Arabia Battle It Out In Yemen

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

It was just after midnight when the Saudis gave the go-ahead for their warplanes to start pounding Shia rebel, known as Houthi, positions in the capital and the south of the country.

The urgent request for help came from the country's President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and led to a frenzy of meetings and calls as Saudi Arabia put together a broad coalition to support its intervention within hours.

The venue was perfect - all the Arab foreign ministers (minus Syria) are gathered in the Egyptian resort Sharm el Sheikh for an Arab League summit. Sources say sideline meetings on Yemen continued well into the night.

Saudi is painting the intervention as a necessary step to defend itself as well as restore the "legitimate" government of Mr Hadi.
