Gorbachev: 'Cold War' Could Turn Violent

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 29 Januari 2015 | 23.31

Mikhael Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, has accused the US of drawing Russia into a new Cold War.

Such a move might even lead to armed conflict unless tensions are eased, Mr Gorbachev warned.

The US "has already drawn us into a new Cold War, trying openly to achieve its main idea of triumphalism," the revered elder statesman said in an interview with Russia's Interfax news agency.

"Where will that lead all of us? A Cold War is already being waged openly. What's next?

"Unfortunately I cannot say for sure that a Cold War won't lead to a 'hot' one. I fear they (the US) could take the risk."

He criticised the West for imposing sanctions on Russia.

"All you hear is about sanctions towards Russia from America and the European Union. Have they totally lost their heads?"

The 83-year-old former Soviet president is much admired internationally because of the way he improved relations with the West during his time in office.

But he is vilified in Russia for much the same reason, and for allowing the break-up of the Soviet Union.

Last year he warned that the world was "on the brink of a new Cold War" and urged the US and the EU to "defrost relations" with Russia.

Mr Gorbachev has been harshly critical of President Vladimir Putin in the past for an "imitation" of democracy.

Seven Dead After Mexico Maternity Wing Blast

At least seven people, including three children, have died after a fuel truck blast next to a maternity hospital in Mexico City.

Dozens more have been injured, mayor Miguel Angel Mancera told local TV.

Some 32 adults and 22 children were injured in the blast outside the maternity and children's hospital in Cuajimalpa region, with many of them hit by flying glass.

None of the injuries were serious, the mayor said.

Some 37 patients have been moved to other hospitals for their own safety.

"We have to conduct an evacuation for safety because a lot of the people are babies in the crib area," Mr Mancera said.

The mayor said the blast was caused by a leak in the hose carrying gas from the truck to the hospital.

A column of smoke billowed over the area in the west of the city as firefighters tried to extinguish the flames.

Much of the building was left in ruins, with the heaviest damage was near the hospital's loading dock.

Mexico has been hit by other gas explosion tragedies in recent years.

Twenty-five people died in May 2013 when a gas tanker's container came loose on a motorway north of Mexico City, setting nearby homes and cars on fire.

Three people died last year in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas when a gas leak caused an explosion in a shopping centre.

South Africa Gunmen In Shopping Mall Shoot-Out

Seven people have been injured in a South African shopping centre after gunmen attempted to storm a bank.

Police would not say how many suspects were involved but the Bedford Centre in Bedfordview, near Johannesburg, was targeted by at least two robbers around 11am.

They were confronted by security guards as they tried to enter the shopping centre's Standard Bank and a shoot-out ensued.

Witnesses said the robbers made it to a nearby grocery store before trying to escape, shooting as they moved around the shopping centre.

Staff and shoppers were reported to have been guided out of the building through a back entrance.

Bedfordview police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said seven people were injured - two suspects, two security guards and three shoppers.

A 9mm handgun and an AK47 were found at the scene.

The two guards were shot in the leg and are in a stable condition while the others - a woman and four men - were described as being in a serious to critical condition in hospital.

One man told Eyewitness News: "As I came out of the toilet I just saw people firing guns. A lady came past me and she was shot in the crossfire. Three people were shot. I think it was a robbery."

As emergency services tried to end the siege, a woman told how she hid from the gunmen under a flight of stairs.

She said: "They have shot people. There's a huge gang. I don't know what they robbed but there's one still inside here. There are still gunshots going off. It's chaos."

The Bedford Centre said on its Twitter account: "Bedford are investigating this horrific incident, no stores were involved."

The incident is the latest in a number of attempted robberies at shopping centres in Gauteng province - including three in August and five in September.

Killed Sydney Hostages' Final Moments Revealed

A hostage killed during a siege at a Sydney cafe was made to kneel before being shot in the back of the head with a sawn-off pump action shotgun, an inquest has heard.

Cafe manager Tori Johnson was killed by Iranian-born gunman Man Haron Monis, moments after several people managed to flee the coffee shop safely.

Jeremy Gormly, one of the lawyers assisting the coroner, said: "Mr Johnson was made by Monis to kneel on the floor of the cafe. After a short lapse of time, Monis simply shot him without further notice or warning in the back of the head.

"The end of the barrel was about 75cm from his head at the moment of discharge. Mr Johnson is believed to have died immediately."

It was the 34-year-old's death which led tactical operatives to force their way into the Lindt cafe in the early hours of 16 December.

The inquest also heard that another hostage who died, 38-year-old barrister Katrina Dawson, was struck by six fragments of a police bullet which ricocheted off the walls when officers stormed the building to end the 16-hour siege.

"One fragment struck a major blood vessel," said Mr Gormly.

"She lost consciousness quickly and died shortly afterwards."

He said three other hostages were also injured by a ricochet off a police bullet.

The inquest also heard of the gunman's movements early on in the day's events - how he first ordered and ate a piece of chocolate cake and drank tea after entering the cafe on the morning 15 December.

Around half an hour later, he asked to move tables and to speak to manager Johnson, who then asked an employee to lock the doors.

Monis then stood up, putting on a vest and bandana, and told staff: "This is an attack. I have a bomb."

Trained officers ended the siege when they threw 11 flash bangs into the building before firing 22 shots at Monis.

Mr Gormly told Glebe Coroner's Court: "At least two bullets, police bullets or bullet fragments hit Monis in the head and 11 other bullets, police bullets or fragments hit him in the body. It seems he was killed instantly."

The inquest aims to determine what happened during the siege, and investigate whether emergency services' response to the hostage situation was sufficient.

It will also examine the motivations of Man Haron Monis.

Although the gunman claimed his attack was in affiliation with Islamic State, it has emerged that he had no contact with the terror organisation before the siege.

Prisoner Given Last-Minute Stay of Execution

By Ian Woods, Sky News Correpondent

A death row prisoner has been granted a stay of execution, the day before he was due to be killed by lethal injection.

Richard Glossip and two other prisoners in Oklahoma were given temporary reprieves by the United States Supreme Court amid concerns about a drug used in executions.

Midazolam is a sedative administered prior to a paralytic that prevents a prisoner flailing around, while a third drug stops their heart. But there has been criticism that the anaesthetic is not strong enough.

Last year, there was an outcry when problems administering the lethal cocktail led to a prisoner, Clayton Lockett, writhing in pain for 43 minutes before he died of a heart attack.

Glossip's attorney, Mark Kenricksen, told Sky News: "We should not use these human beings as lab rats for Oklahoma's attempt to find a constitutionally acceptable death penalty protocol, and that's why we're suing."

The Glossip case is highly unusual, because he is the only one of the 49 prisoners on Oklahoma's death row who did not actually kill anyone. He was accused of paying an accomplice to murder the owner of a motel where they worked.

The actual killer, Justin Sneed, was offered a plea deal. He escaped the death penalty in return for testifying against Glossip, and is serving a life sentence with no hope of parole.

Until a few weeks ago, there seemed to be little interest in Glossip's impending execution. Then, one of America's foremost abolitionists got involved.

Sister Helen Prejean is the Catholic nun who wrote about her experiences of working with death row inmates. Her book, Dead Man Walking, became a film - and Susan Sarandon's portrayal of the nun won her an Oscar for Best Actress in 1996.

Earlier this week, Sister Helen breezed into Oklahoma City and told a news conference that the eyes of the world were on the state.

She visited Glossip for the first time just a few hours before news of his reprieve was delivered. The Supreme Court will hear submissions on the issue on 29 April.

Scorsese Film: Worker Dies On Set Of New Drama

One man has been killed and two others injured in an accident on a Taiwanese film lot being prepared for the shooting of a new Martin Scorsese film.

Chen Yu-lung was killed when scaffolding around a building being pulled down suddenly collapsed, Taiwan's Central News Agency said.

All three were Taiwanese contractors hired by the film's producers.

The lot belongs to the Chinese Culture and Movie Centre, which issued a statement saying the contracting film crew were responsible for health and safety in the accident.

Filming on the historical drama entitled Silence has not yet begun, the news agency said.

The film is based on a 1966 novel by Japanese author Shusaku Endo about two Jesuit priests in 17th Century Japan.

The cast includes Liam Neeson and Andrew Garfield of the Amazing Spider-Man.

While Scorsese is in Taiwan preparing to make the film, it is not known if he was on the lot when the accident happened.

A spokesman for the film could not immediately be contacted.

Deadline Hollywood website quoted an unidentified representative of the film as saying that the contractors had been brought in to reinforce the building after it was considered unsafe by the producers.

The site claimed the worker was killed and his colleague injured when the ceiling collapsed as it was being reinforced.

Mutating Ebola Could Become More Contagious

By Thomas Moore, Health and Science Correspondent

Scientists have confirmed that the Ebola virus is mutating - and could become more contagious.

Researchers at the Institute Pasteur in France say they have detected substantial changes to the genetic code of the virus.

Although they don't yet know what effect that will have on the epidemic, they fear the virus could spread from person to person more easily.

In previous Ebola outbreaks, the virus has only infected a few dozen people and died out within weeks.

But the current prolonged epidemic has given the virus time to pass through many more generations, in many more people, giving it greater opportunity to evolve.

Scientists say it is highly unlikely that the mutations will lead to the Ebola becoming airborne.

But the virus - originally from fruit bats - could become better adapted to living in humans.

Scientists say some people may even carry the virus without showing symptoms, leading it to spread more rapidly.

The changes to the virus could also result in resistance to drug treatments - and reduce the effectiveness of vaccines currently being developed.

The latest figures from the World Health Organisation show 22,000 people have been infected by the virus and 8,800 have died.

But the infection rate in recent weeks is just one sixth of what it was in October.

UN Ebola coordinator David Nabarro said: "The number of cases is decreasing week by week and getting to zero in many places.

"But we still see occasional flare-ups. The epidemic is not contained yet."

New results show that a vaccine tested on volunteers in Oxford successfully triggers an immune response, but at a lower level than had been hoped for.

Scientists are now studying the effect of a booster dose in the hope that it will give better protection.

Jordan Demands Guarantee Before Prisoner Swap

Jordan has said it needs guarantees the pilot held by Islamic State militants is still alive before it can go ahead with a prisoner swap.

The jihadist group has demanded the release of failed suicide bomber Sajida al Rishawi in return for Jordanian pilot Lieutenant Muath al Kasaesbeh's freedom.

But a government spokesman in Amman said IS must provide proof that Mr al Kasaesbeh is not dead if it is to proceed with the deal.

It comes after an audio recording purportedly from a man also being held by IS suggested the pilot had just hours to live unless Iraqi prisoner al Rishawi was released.

The message, which is unverified, is believed to have been read out by Kenji Goto - a Japanese journalist taken by Islamic State militants last year.

In it the voice demands the release of Sajida al Rishawi, who was sentenced to death in Jordan for her involvement in a 2005 terrorist attack that killed 60 people.

The man states that a fellow hostage - Mr al Kasaesbeh - would be killed if the prisoner was not ready to be exchanged at the Turkish border with Syria by "sunset".

That would make the deadline around mid-afternoon UK time.

The brief message did not make it clear what the fate of either hostage would be even if the group's demands were met.

Japan's chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga said: "We are still in the process of verification but with all of the information gathered we think that there is a high probability that the voice was indeed that of Mr Goto."

Meanwhile, Mr Goto's wife, Rinko, broke her silence, pleading with the Jordanian and Japanese governments to reach an agreement with IS - and saying she hoped her two-year-old daughter would see her father again.

Although the Jordanian government is willing to hand over the would-be suicide bomber, nations around the world - including the US - believe the deal with IS should not go ahead.

Such an exchange could set a dangerous precedent, encouraging terrorists to take more people hostage.

However, if both hostages were to survive, it could provide crucial intelligence about their captors, as the whereabouts of a man dubbed "Jihadi John" remains unknown.

The family of Mr al Kaseasbeh have met Jordan's King Abdullah, where they were assured that "things were still positive".

Despite this, the country's foreign minister has not received any evidence that the pilot is alive and well.

The Japanese government is investigating the latest footage, which was originally uploaded to YouTube.

The mother of Mr Goto has made a tearful appeal to Japan's Prime Minister to help save her son.

Junko Ishido said she had begged Shinzo Abe to "please save Kenji" and to work with the Jordanian government to secure his release.

Wife Of Japanese IS Hostage Speaks Out

The wife of a Japanese hostage held by Islamic State has spoken for the first time since her husband was captured after the militants sent her an ultimatum.

Kenji Goto has been held captive since last October, with the jihadist group demanding Jordan releases failed Iraqi suicide bomber Sajida al Rishawi in return for his freedom.

IS has said it will also allow captured Jordanian pilot Lieutenant Muath al Kasaesbeh to return home if its demands are met.

Mr Goto's wife, Rinko, has now issued a statement saying she fears it is the "last chance" for her husband.

"I have not spoken out until now as I have been trying to protect my children and family from the media attention Kenji's plight has created around the world," she said.

"I fear that this is the last chance for my husband and we now have only a few hours left to secure his release and the life of Lt Muath al Kaseasbeh.

"My husband and I have two very young daughters. Our baby girl was only three weeks old when Kenji left. I hope our oldest daughter, who is just two, will get to see her father again.

"I want them both to grow up knowing their father. My husband is a good and honest man who went to Syria to show the plight of those who suffer."

She said she had previously been contacted by the group, who had demanded $200m, before she and the militants exchanged "several emails".

But she said had received the following message from kidnappers in the past 20 hours:

"Rinko,

"YOU MUST PUBLICISE AND EXPOSE THIS MESSAGE TO THE WORLD MEDIA NOW! OTHERWISE KENJI WILL BE NEXT!

"If Sajida is not on the Turkish border ready for the exchange for Kenji by Thursday 29th Jan at sunset, The Jordanian pilot will be executed immediately!"

Mrs Goto thanked the Jordan and Japan governments, but issued a plea to the two countries' governments.

"I beg the Jordanian and Japanese Governments to understand that the fates of both men are in their hands.

"My family was based in Jordan when I was young, and I went to school in Amman until I was 12 years old, so I have great affection and fond memories of Jordan and its people."

An audio recording  purportedly from Mr Goto had previously emerged, which also demanded al Rishawi's release.
