A 60-year-old man who broke down in the Australian Outback attempted to walk 30 miles to get help but was found dead just over a mile from safety.

The man had been driving to Windidda Station, a cattle ranch about 500 miles inland from Perth, Western Australia, in the height of the country's summer.

Police said he was with a woman when his car broke down on Sunday.

After no car passed by on Sunday night, the man set out on foot across the near desert on Monday morning with what police said was "a small container of water".

The woman remained in the car but also decided to walk on Tuesday morning after no help arrived.

She was rescued by passers-by before she reached Windidda Station and was taken to her destination where she raised the alarm.

The man's body was found late on Wednesday 1.2miles (2km) from Windidda.

A coroner's investigation has been launched to determine how the man died.

Police have previously issued a warning to drivers in the Outback to carry plenty of water in the summer months and to stay with their vehicles if they break down.

In December, a man and his two young sons were found after spending several days stuck in a bog in the Outback in central Queensland.

Wiluna, the biggest population centre in the region, about 100 miles from Windidda, was forecast to have a maximum temperature of 39C (102F) on Thursday.
