Brooklyn Lift Stabbing: Man Arrested

Police have arrested a man over the fatal stabbing of a six-year-old boy in the lift of a New York City apartment block.

The attack in the Brooklyn housing complex also left a seven-year-old girl fighting for her life. She remains in a critical but stable condition following surgery.

Daniel St Hubert was picked up by police just after 8pm in a residential neighbourhood in Queens - minutes after a public appeal was made to help find him.

In the appeal Police Commissioner William Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio had urged residents to call authorities if they saw or had any information about St Hubert.

Forensic evidence had led police to identify the 27-year-old as a suspect. Authorities did not elaborate and provided no possible motive for the knife attack.

Sources say officers tracked him down through his mobile phone.

Witness Michael Dowery said St Hubert had a "blank expression on his face" as he was led to the police car with his hands behind his back.

Prince Joshua, 6, and Mikayla, 7, were on their way to get ice cream when they were both stabbed multiple times with a steak knife.

The assailant fled the scene at Boulevard Houses and abandoned the weapon outside the building.

The attack provoked public outrage, and a reward of tens of thousands of dollars was offered.

It has emerged St Hubert, who shaved his head while hunted by police, had been on parole.

He was only released from prison last month after serving five years for the domestic assault and attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend.

He has nine prior arrests including assaulting a police officer and a corrections officer.

The attack on the children also cast a spotlight on the issue of surveillance cameras because none was in place to capture any images of the attacker despite funds set aside by the New York City Housing Authority to pay for them.

Mayor Mr de Blasio had said an "unacceptable bureaucracy" led to the lack of security cameras in the apartment block.

Police say they are also investigating whether St Hubert may also have fatally stabbed 18-year-old Tanaya Copeland on Friday a short distance from where Sunday's attack happened.
