With more than 800 million eligible to vote over four weeks, India is taking part in the world's biggest democratic process.

Some 815 million people are eligible to vote in nine phases. The election began this week and will last about four weeks, with the results expected on May 16.

Of those eligible to vote, 23 million are aged 18 or 19. A surge in registration among young voters means they make up 2.8% of the electorate, compared to just 0.75% in 2009.
