Alleged Hitman 'Confesses To 40 Murders'

A man charged with carrying out nine contract killings has confessed to murdering 40 people over several decades, authorities have said.

Jose Manuel Martinez, 51, allegedly told US investigators that he carried out the crimes while working as an enforcer for a drug cartel.

Authorities believed him because of the details he was able to provide, said Errek Jett, the district attorney in Lawrence County, Alabama.

His victims ranged in age from 22 to 56.

Martinez was arrested last year shortly after crossing the border from Mexico into Arizona. He was then sent to Alabama, where he awaits trial on one murder charge.

Defence lawyer Thomas Turner, who represents Martinez in that case, said his client maintains his innocence to that charge and does not seem to be a hardened killer.

"I've found him to be polite and a likable individual," Mr Turner said.

"He has a good personality as far as talking with him."

After Martinez was arrested, several investigators from across the country came to question him, and he was charged with a total of nine killings. 

According to judicial authorities, Martinez targeted victims in Tulare, Kern and Santa Barbara counties in California between 1980 and 2011.

The California charges would make Martinez eligible for a death sentence if he is convicted.

Martinez told authorities he had been a professional killer since the age of 16, the Los Angeles Times reported.

He declined to say which drug cartel had allegedly employed him.

Martinez's mother told the LA Times she was overwhelmed by the news of her son's alleged crimes.

"This is hard for me, really hard," Loreta Fernandez was quoted as saying.

"I'm still shaking."
